FAIZABAD: Deaths of at least 76 children at Bahraich district hospital over the past eight weeks have numbed the local people. Bahraich's chief medical officer Dr AK Pandey on Tuesday said that a number of medical reasons were responsible for these deaths.
" Four main problems including birth asphyxia, meningitis, acute encephalitis syndrome and septicaemia caused over 90% of these deaths," he said.
This figure does not include the deaths caused at homes and at private clinics.
In fact, the burden of diseases has triggered a shortage of beds in the hospital. "The 30-bed paediatric ward has accommodated 20 additional beds. Some of these beds have been placed in the corridor to extend treatment to the unwell children. Efforts are on to add more beds," the CMO said.
The diseases and shortage of beds has led to a panic situation in Bahraich town as scores of children have also taken ill due to seasonal diseases. Several parents alleged that the doctors were referring the unwell children to health centres in Lucknow and Gorakhpur on account of shortage of beds.
"People have no option but to take their children to private hospitals as the beds in district hospital are full," stated a local resident Ashish, adding, " there was dearth of medicines, oxygen supply apparatus and health staff." Countering the allegation, the CMO said: "This is a false claim. We are managing the situation with best possible efforts."
