Entries are now closed for the OpenWalls Arles British Journal of Photography competition – but you can take a sneak peek at some of the best entries reviewed so far by clicking through the gallery above.

In June, 1854 Media and the British Journal of Photography invited emerging and established photographers from around the world to submit work to the competition by responding to the theme 'Home & Away'.

Entries closed on September 13 and the work is now being judged by six industry panellists.

A shortlist of 50 images will be exhibited at the Galerie Huit Arles in France for one month in July 2019, coinciding with the Les Rencontres d'Arles 2019 photography festival. Three finalists will also receive travel accommodation, as well as weekend passes to the festival.

The entries are being judged by Vignes Balasingam, founder and director of OBSCURA Festival of Photography, Genevieve Fussell, senior photo editor at The New Yorker, Clement Saccomani, managing director of NOOR Images, Daniel Miller, founder of YourDailyPhotograph.com, Julia de Bierre, gallery director of Galerie Huit Arles, and Simon Bainbridge, editorial director of the British Journal of Photography.

"Hosting OpenWalls is an exciting opportunity to create an outstanding curated exhibition in an unusual setting," says Julia de Bierre, who is opening up the walls of her gallery to display the 50 shortlisted images next summer. The exhibition will coincide with the 50th edition of Les Rencontres d’Arles, one of the most famous photography festivals in the world.

"For our first exhibition we are inviting work responding to the theme 'Home & Away', with the aim being to capture a sense of belonging, escapism, or identity," she added.
