Insider: Class-by-class Indy-area rankings after Week 6 of HS football season

Each week of the high school football season, I will rank the top high school football teams in Central Indiana by class. Here is how it shakes out after the sixth week of the season:

Class 6A Top 10

1. Warren Central (6-0): Ho hum. Warren Central rolled to a 59-7 win over Pike as Jayden George was 10-for-13 for 144 yards and four touchdowns through the air. David Bell (nine catches, 136 yards and two TDs) and Romeir Elliott (122 rushing yards, one TD) also had big games. The Warriors host Lawrence North on Friday. Previous: 1.

2. Brownsburg (6-0): The Bulldogs survived for a 30-28 win over Westfield when the Shamrocks missed a short field goal with a little more than a minute left. Easters passed for 328 yards and two TDs, going to Bryce Kirtz nine times for 244 yards and both scores. Brownsburg is at Zionsville on Friday. Previous: 2.

3. Avon (5-1): Avon’s defense has posted back-to-back shutouts after a 33-0 win over Fishers. The Tigers managed just three yards of total offense. Avon is at Westfield on Friday. Previous: 3.

4. Carmel (5-1): The Greyhounds showed plenty of fight and resilience to rally late in regulation and then win a 41-40 triple-overtime thriller over North Central. The defense limited the Panthers to just 163 yards of total offense. Previous: 4.

5. North Central (4-2): Tre’von Elliott is as exciting as any player in the area. Elliott returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown and nearly took another back to start the second half. He also had 81 of the team’s 102 receiving yards. North Central is at Lawrence Central on Friday. Previous: 5.

6. Center Grove (3-3): Carson Steele rushed for 227 yards and four touchdowns as Center Grove ran over Lawrence Central for a 33-10 win. The Trojans can get some momentum going with upcoming games at Pike and at Lawrence North. Previous: 6.

7. Ben Davis (3-3): Delbert Mimms rushed for 269 yards and four touchdowns in a 48-38 win over Lawrence North. The Giants have a big game at Carmel on Friday. Previous: 7.

8. Lawrence Central (2-4): Can the Bears give North Central a battle on Friday? This team has been blown out by Warren Central and Center Grove (a 33-10 loss on Friday) and is facing a tough finish here with North Central and then at Ben Davis and at Carmel. Previous: 8.

9. Westfield (3-3): The Shamrocks were right there with a chance to win in a 30-28 loss to Brownsburg on Friday. It does not get any easier this week with Avon coming to visit. Camden Simons was 16-for-19 passing for 230 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 69 yards and a score. Previous: 9.

10. Hamilton Southeastern (3-3): The Royals posted a 30-14 win over Zionsville on Friday. Up next is a trip to Noblesville as HSE looks to win back-to-back games for the first time this season. Previous: NR.

Dropped out: Lawrence North (10)

Class 5A Top 3

1. New Palestine (6-0): New Palestine won its 51st consecutive regular season game with a 76-7 victory over Greenfield-Central. The Dragons are at 1-5 Shelbyville on Friday. Previous: 1.

2.      Cathedral (3-3): Orin Edwards passed for 300 yards and four touchdowns in a 55-14 win over Jeffersonville. The Irish play a tough Ryle Union (Ky.) team on Friday at Tech. Previous: NR.

3. Decatur Central (5-1): Kenny Tracy rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass in a 42-21 win over Plainfield. The Hawks will host Greenwood on Friday. Previous: 3.

Dropped out: Martinsville (2)

Class 4A Top 3

1. Mooresville (5-1): The Pioneers roughed up Franklin 55-21 to rebound from a loss to Decatur Central last week. Karson Goodman passed for 283 yards and two touchdowns. Mooresville has a big game at Whiteland on Friday. Previous: 2.

2. Beech Grove (5-1): Three of Jordan Reel’s five completions went for touchdowns in a 33-26 win over Monrovia. Sergio Hulse ran for 163 yards. Beech Grove will host Cardinal Ritter on Friday. Previous: 3.

3. Pendleton Heights (4-2): How will the Arabians respond from a surprising 28-14 loss to Mt. Vernon? The Marauders limited Pendleton Heights to less than 200 yards of total offense. Another tough game is upcoming this week at 5-1 Delta. Previous: 2.

Class 3A Top 3

1. Bishop Chatard (6-0): Chatard was tested again and passed the test, defeating Guerin Catholic 21-13. The Trojans look to stay unbeaten at Cincinnati Winton Woods on Friday. Previous: 1.

2. Brebeuf Jesuit (4-2): Brebeuf’s decisive 44-12 win over Roncalli was one of the surprising scores of the night. Caleb Ellison passed for 168 yards and two touchdowns. The Braves host Terre Haute South on Friday. Previous: 3.

3. Guerin Catholic (4-2): Guerin should not be too disappointed after a 21-13 loss at Chatard. The Golden Eagles go on the road at Pontiac Notre Dame (Mich.) on Friday. Guerin vs. Brebeuf in two weeks should be a good one. Previous: 2.

Class 2A/A Top 3

1. Western Boone (6-0): The Stars recorded their fourth shutout in six games with a 57-0 win at Frankfort. Spencer Wright passed for two touchdowns and ran for another. Western Boone hosts Southmont on Friday. Previous: 1.

2. Scecina (5-1): The Crusaders steamrolled Lutheran 50-7 as Mac Ayers passed for 216 yards and two touchdowns, his sixth consecutive game with at least two TD passes. A huge showdown is coming Friday as Scecina plays unbeaten Triton Central at Bishop Chatard. Previous: 2.

3. Triton Central (6-0): The Tigers stayed undefeated with a 49-22 win over Cardinal Ritter. Can Triton Central end a two-game losing streak to Scecina? We will find out Friday at Bishop Chatard. Previous: 3.
