Gordon Ramsay has revealed his heartache over his twins Jack and Holly, 18, leaving home for university last week, as he appeared on the Jonathan Ross show which airs on Friday

Appearing on the show alongside Gino D’Acampo and First Dates Maitre'D Fred Sirieix, with whom he stars in the upcoming cooking show Gordon, Gino and Fred: The Roadtrip, Gordon opened up about his children growing up.

'Tilly [Matilda], Tana and myself took Jack down to the college last week. Man that was hard,' Ramsay admitted.

He continued of Jack: 'We put him in his little room, left him some fettuccine and pasta for him to cook, student food.

'We left him there and I got in the car and I was a mess thinking "My best mate has just left me!"

'And then the next day we put Holly into University. I was like, "Man this is tough!"'

Revealing that he had taken Jack (left) to The University of Exeter, then Holly, (right) to Ravensbourne University last week, he confessed to being 'a mess', describing how it felt as though his 'best friend' was leaving him

And when host Jonathan Ross questioned what he would do when his youngest daughter Tilly leaves home, he replied: 'I'll cry!'

Gordon's revelation comes just a month after he posted a picture as he posed alongside his son Jack on the beach.

'You can't beat a great chat about life on the beach before dinner with your best mate! I'm going to miss this one when he goes next week to University,' he wrote.

Jack will go to the University of Exeter after achieving one A and two Bs, while Holly Ramsay is off to Ravensbourne University London with an A, a B and a C.

In August Ramsay, whose eldest daughter Megan, 20, is already studying psychology at Oxford Brookes University, congratulated them on their A-Levels in a sweet Instagram post to his twins: 'Dinner's on me'.

Ramsay shared a snap of the trio enjoying dinner, writing: 'Well done Jack and Holly! 'Two more Ramsays off to university.

'Exeter (and) Ravensbourne. I'm so proud, amazing results, ABB, ABC. Also well done to all the other students on a very tough year! Dinner's on me!'.

Despite showing his softer side of late, last year Gordon said his children won't be left his multi-million pound fortune in his will, revealing they aren't allowed to sit in first class with him or eat in his restaurants.

The chef, who is known for his Michelin-starred restaurants and heated reality television programmes, said his children will only be getting a 25 per cent deposit on a flat as he prefers them to 'work hard' for their money as it is not his 'number one objective.'

Speaking to The Telegraph, Gordon, whose net worth has been estimated at £40million, said: 'It's [his fortune] definitely not going to them, and that's not in a mean way; it's to not spoil them.

'Last time we went to Royal Hospital Road [his restaurant in Chelsea] was for Megan's 16th birthday, and that was the first time we've ever eaten there with the kids.

'They have served the Chelsea pensioners there for Christmas lunch, but not eaten there.

Tilly has her own cookery show called Matilda and the Ramsay Bunch, Jack, has aspirations to become a Marine, Holly is interested in fashion and works part-time in a shop, and Megan is a philosophy student who babysits to earn cash.

And parents Gordon and Tana need not worry about their children too much as they fly the nest, as Tana told Ireland on Sunday last month how she follows her children on the Find My Friends app, which allows users to see the location of others using GPS.
