Kohli notched up his hundred in 187 balls which included 8 boundaries. (Match Scorecard)

This is his 17th ton as Test captain and it has taken him 123 innings to reach the landmark. For the Don though, it took him 66. It is also his fourth Test ton as well this year.

Kohli, who was 72 not out overnight, took time to knock off the 28 runs needed for yet another hundred while his partner Pant (92 off 84), who resumed at 17, went all guns blazing.

A second Test hundred in his fourth Test was for the taking but Pant, attempting another six over mid-wicket, failed to pick the googly and top-edged it for a simple catch to Keemo Paul at backward point. His entertaining innings was laced with eight fours and four sixes.

Kohli (120 not out) had the company of Ravindra Jadeja (19 not out off 33) when lunch was taken. India, aiming to bat only once in the game, scored 142 runs in 29 overs bowled in the session.

Earlier, Rishabh Pant also scored his maiden Test fifty and was on his way to his second ton till he was dismissed on 92. The wicket-keeper batsman came close after an aggressive-attacking display at the Saurashtra Cricket Stadium.

Teenage sensation Prithvi Shaw announced his arrival in top-flight cricket by becoming the youngest Indian to score a Test century on debut, headlining the home team's march to 364 for four against West Indies on day one of the series-opener in Rajkot.

Shaw (134 off 154) and Cheteshwar Pujara (86 off 130) laid the foundation for a big score with a 206-run partnership after the early loss of K L Rahul (0).

The West Indians looked listless on the field as boundaries came at will for India. Their troubles had mounted even before the start of the game as Holder pulled out with an ankle injury, giving Kraigg Brathwaite a chance to lead the team.

Their lead pacer, Kemar Roach, was already ruled out of the series opener due to a bereavement in the family.
