A83 emergency diversion reopens during daylight hours

After a week of misery for motorists in Argyll using a 60-mile diversion as a result of multiple landslides hitting the Rest and Be Thankful, the emergency diversion route opened today.

In Argyll, the emergency diversion route at the Rest and Be Thankful on the A83 Tarbet to Campbeltown road opened.

It had been unsafe to open the Old Military Road at the bottom of the A83 Tarbet to Campbeltown road as a result of the slips caused by heavy rain.

Work was continuing yesterday to improve conditions on the slope above the road.

As a precaution, given the forecast for inclement weather tomorrow the Old Military Road closed at 6pm with a further inspection to be carried out at 8am tomorrow to determine whether it can reopen.

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Manager said: “This is the first step to the full opening of the Old Military Road and ultimately the A83 and hopefully will allow for improved journey times in and out of Argyll.

“Safety of motorists and our workforce is always a priority and given the forecast rain for Tuesday a cautious approach is being taken.

“We will continue to monitor the situation on the hillside and it is hoped that given the generally improving weather forecast this week that good progress can be made in the full recovery of the A83.”
