PORT CLINTON — Galion’s lone surviving girls tennis player, Kayley Gimbel, headed to Port Clinton High School on a brisk, 40 degree Saturday morning to compete in the seeding round of the Division II district tournament.

Gimbel earned a trip to the state tourney at Lindner Family Tennis Center on Friday by qualifying for the semis on Saturday but was hoping to come away with a district title to add to her sectional championship.

Gimbel got off to a slow start against her semifinals opponent, Napoleon junior Aliza Lankenau. Kayley dropped the first set 2-6 to find herself in a hole early. However, Gimbel would warm up and took the next two sets; 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the district finals match. Gimbel defeated Lankenau at Port Clinton for the second consecutive season with the victory.

In the finals, Kayley would be fitted against Toledo Central Catholic sophomore, Ellie Hire. Hire, the third seed entering district play would go on to hand Gimbel her first loss of the season; 0-6, 2-6. Hire is one of five members of the Toledo Central Catholic players headed to the state tournament this week in Mason. With the loss, Gimbel will be in action on Friday as the Northwest District runner-up. Her first-round opponent will be the Southwest District runner-up in the likes of Cincinnati Indian Hill junior, Hayley Hirsch at 9 a.m. on Friday, October 19.

Lankenau would finish as the third seed in the district while Toledo Ottawa Hills junior, Priya Bhatt will represent Disctrict IV as the four seed.
