Kolkata: Class XI boy killed during bike stunt on 2nd Hooghly bridge
The damaged bike belongs to Sahani's brother
KOLKATA:A Class XI student from Ballygunge died on Saturday morning while trying to perform stunts on his bike on a ramp on the second Hooghly bridge. His friend, 21-year-old Amit Balmiki, who was riding pillion, was also injured.
Laloo Sahani, 18, was fond of performing stunts on bikes. While his friends knew about his fancy tricks, neither his parents nor his brother was aware.
On Saturday morning, Sahani went out with his brother’s bike.

Around 7am, Sahani decided to go from Prinsep Ghat to the second Hooghly bridge. As the bike sped through the relatively empty road on the second Hooghly bridge ramp, he decided to remove his hands from the handlebars and perform some stunts. The bike lost control and the tyres skidded. Before Sahani could react, the vehicle hit the median. Neither rider was wearing any headgear and were severely injured. Sahani was taken to a local hospital and was declared brought dead.

According to locals, Sahani used to perform such stunts. He would often take his brother’s bike without telling him. The police are looking into the CCTV footages from the spot to determine what caused the accident.

Another dead in accident
On Thursday morning, Netaji Nagar resident Pratim Kundu, 21, died in the same area as Sahani after his bike met with an accident. According to police sources, Kundu was returning home via the second Hooghly bridge when the accident happened. Before he reached second Hooghly bridge, he had called up his father. His bike was hit by a lorry and the riders — Kundu and his friend Subhadip Chakraborty — fell. Neither was wearing a helmet.

Even though there are campaigns against stunt biking, it continues to pose a threat. Apart from risking their own lives, stunt bikers pose a threat to others on the road. Not only the administration and the police, citizens should also step forward to rein in the menace.
