VIJAYAWADA:  With an aim to provide the people of Vijayawada with places of leisure and to beautify the areas leading to the new capital, the Amaravati Development Corporation Ltd (ADCL) is gearing up to launch the much-touted Vijayawada-Amaravati Gateway Project soon.

Under the project, convention centres, star hotels and other commercial spaces will be built, in addition to the development of green spaces.

According to ADCL officials, the plan for the development of two pieces of land near Krishnaveni Ghat is ready. “We are ready with the plan to establish commercial spaces in the land opposite the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation office and in another land belonging to the Energy department near Rajiv Gandhi Park. We will hold a meeting with the stakeholders shortly and go for tenders,” D Lakshmi Parthasarathy, Chairperson and Managing Director of ADCL, told TNIE.

While a convention centre, star hotel and others are proposed in the land opposite the VMC office, exotic and ethnic food courts will come up in the land belonging to the Energy Department, where a substation is located now.

The ADCL CMD also said that the refurbishment of Rajiv Gandhi Park, which has been pending for a long time, will also take off in the next few months. The park will be turned into a theme park where the establishment of food courts, amphitheatre, laser show and other facilities are proposed. “A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) has been formed and we are working on taking the project forward,” Lakshmi Parthasarathy said. The ADCL, which has already taken up beautification of Indrakeeladri, is expected to launch the second phase of works shortly.

“Since Indrakeeladri and its surroundings serve as a gateway to Amaravati, we are expediting the project. We are also preparing the plans to beautify Krishnaveni Ghat and the abutting hillocks,” Lakshmi Parthasarathy added.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu asked the officials to instal a huge flag post on the riverbed near Krishnaveni Ghat, on which the ADCL is working on.

The new projects under the Vijayawada-Amaravati Gateway Project will be taken up in an extent of 28.9 acres in and around Krishnaveni Ghat. The land is owned by various departments, including Vijayawada Municipal Corporation - 12.91 acres, APSRTC - 2.93 acres, APTransco and APGenco - 3.91 acres, Water Resources (Public Works department) - 5.2 acres, and South Central Railway - 4.04 acres.
