CHENNAI: Four persons, including two women, were killed and one man injured in a blast at an illegal firecracker unit at Kancheepuram on Tuesday. They had been making crackers at the house of one Madeen. Police said the unit, in a residential area, was run illegally.

“At around 10 am, residents of Chinna Kancheepuram heard a huge blast and saw smoke billowing out of the house,” said a police officer. Five fire tenders arrived and officers struggled for five hours to put out the fire.

The three, who died on the spot, were identified as Mastan (37), Sharina Banu (45) and her son Mustaq (22). Sharbudeen Banu (70) died at the Kancheepuram government hospital in the evening. The man who was hurt sustained 45 per cent burns. Kanchi taluk police registered a case and are looking for Madeen. Probe is on.
