HTC Exodus 1, the company's blockchain-based smartphone, available for pre-order now, can be purchased only with bitcoin or ethereum.
The struggling Taiwanese phone maker launched its flagship phone as part of its strategy to shift focus to the new technology. Customers can buy the phone, expected to be shipped by December, for 0.15 bitcoin or 4.78 ether tokens. At current conversion rates, this is around $960.
Exodus 1 will run decentralized applications. HTC's own cryptocurrency wallet called Zion will make its new phone function as a hardware cryptocurrency wallet.
It claims to have a secluded area on the phone's chip, kept separate from its Android operating system, to keep a customer's cryptocurrency safe.
In a blog post, HTC, which has shipped over 100 million phones, wrote, "Our vision is to expand the blockchain ecosystem by creating the world's first phone dedicated to decentralized applications and security. With the release of the HTC Exodus we can now make this a reality."
It was in May that the company announced, at the CoinDesk Consensus conference, its plans to make a new blockchain-powered Android phone.
Switzerland-based startup Sirin Labs had earlier launched the world's first blockchain-powered smartphone called Finney.
Huawei was also rumored to be working on a blockchain phone.
