FAKE: Video of MP couple beaten by kin being used to defame ‘Hindu Yuva Vahini’

CLAIM
A video going viral on social media accuses ‘Hindu Yuva Vahini’, an outfit floated by Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, of “humiliating and thrashing” a couple.
In the video, a couple can be seen being punched and kicked by a group of men. Some of the attackers have their faces covered.

The video has been shared by many users, including some TV actors, on Twitter as well as Facebook.
One of the Twitter users who posted the video claimed that the incident took place “somewhere in UP”. The user held Yogi’s “Hindu Yuva thugs” responsible for orchestrating the attack and said their “reign of terror” would get much worse if “they” win in 2019.

The tweet went viral and was later quoted by TV personalities like Maria Goretti and Shruti Seth who expressed disgust at what was “happening in the name of religion” in the country.


TRUTH
The video doesn’t belong to UP and it is not members of Yogi’s Hindu Yuva Vahini who are thrashing the couple. The video is from Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh and ones beating the couple are reportedly relatives of the girl. The incident reportedly took place in the second week of October this year.
VERIFICATION AND METHODOLOGY
Using ‘Fake video news debunker by InVID’ extension on Google Chrome, key frames from the video were extracted.
After chopping off the portion highlighted by text, the remaining was used to do a reverse-image search. Using reverse-image search on Yandex, the original video dated October 8 was found.
A video report on ABP News said that the men thrashing the couple were girl’s brother and his friends.
On further investigation, it was found that the said incident was preceded by another incident wherein the house of the same couple was set on fire by the girl’s family members.
It was a case of interfaith marriage where a woman married her neighbour belonging to a different religion, upsetting her family members.
