The Nagar panchayat chairman of Chopan area in Sonbhadra was shot dead by four persons Thursday. One of the assailants was caught and thrashed by people present on the spot, who later handed him over to the police. The remaining three escaped on two motorcycles. Police are yet to ascertain the motive behind the murder of the chairman, identified as Imtiyaz Ahmad.

“The incident occurred at around 6 am. Like every other day, Ahmad left his house to play volleyball in Preet Nagar locality. He left his house in his car and as soon as he got out of it near the volleyball court, four assailants came on two bikes and opened fire at him. Two bullets hit Ahmad near his thighs and he fell on the ground. He was rushed to the district hospital by local residents but he was declared brought dead at the hospital,” said Sonbhadra Superintendent of Police (SP) Rathod Kirit Kumar Haribhai.

Obra Circle Officer Krishna Gopal Singh said, “The post-mortem report stated the cause of death as excessive bleeding. Though the reason behind the attack is unknown, it appears it was a planned one as the killers knew Ahmad comes to this place every day.” One of the assailants, later identified as Kashmir Kumar Paswan, 32, was overpowered by bystanders. An FIR has been registered against Kashmir and his unidentified associates on charge of murder.
