Chopan Nagar panchayat chairman shot dead, one held

Though the reason behind the attack is unknown, it appears it was a planned one as the killers knew Ahmad comes to this place every day.” One of the assailants, later identified as Kashmir Kumar Paswan, 32, was overpowered by bystanders. An FIR has been registered against Kashmir and his unidentified associates on charge of murder.

“We recovered a carbine and empty rounds from the spot. Eyewitnesses confirmed that the other assailants had pistols in their hands. As Kashmir was also injured after being beaten up by locals, he was referred to Banaras Hindu University for treatment, and discharged in the evening. We are interrogating him about the other assailants and the reason behind the attack,” said SP Haribhai.

Ahmad, a two-time chairman of Chopan nagar panchayat, was also in the mining business and a resident of Sonbhadra. He had contested the panchayat elections as an independent, police said.
