HYDERABAD: Justice C Praveen Kumar of the Hyderabad high court has said that the court cannot issue direction to the police to permit the erection of the statue of Pranay Kumar in a public place in Miryalaguda town in Telangana. The judge said this while closing a petition filed by Chinnam Venkata Ramana Rao of Nalgonda district who wanted the authorities to follow the Supreme Court judgement that banned the erection of statues in public places.
The petitioner challenged the proposed plan to erect the statue of Pranay who was murdered by hired assassins for marrying an upper caste girl, Amrita, from the same Miryalaguda town. The alleged official inaction in stopping the construction and the installation of the statue in a public place near an R & B road in the town was also questioned.
The judge in his order said that the Miryalaguda police had already issued notice to Pranay’s father asking him not to erect the statue without obtaining permission from the authorities. The counsel for the Telangana state had opposed the idea of Pranay Statue in Miryalaguda and said the state had issued a GO asking the authorities not to permit installation of any statue at public roads, pavements, sideways and other public utility places in tune with an order of the Supreme Court. It is clear that no permission has been granted by the authorities to erect the statue of late Pranay Kumar, and instructions were also issued to the father not to erect the statue unless permission is granted by the authorities, the judge said and closed the petition saying that nothing remains to be adjudicated in the matter.
