Gujarat: Congress MLA held, police say he sought Rs 40 lakh from irrigation ‘scam’ accused Parsottam Sabariya

The District and sessions court of Morbi rejected the bail application of Congress MLA Parsottam Sabariya on Saturday. The MLA from Dhrangadhra Assembly constituency has been arrested for allegedly demanding Rs 35 lakh bribe from those who were later arrested by police in connection with an alleged scam in irrigation schemes.

Sabariya was picked up by Morbi district police from his residence in Trajpar village near Morbi town in the wee hours of 28th of last month and was formally arrested hours later. A local court had remanded him to police custody for a day on Monday. As police did not seek the extension of his custody, the court had sent him to judicial custody on Tuesday. The same day, the MLA had approached Morbi district and sessions court for bail. The court principal district and sessions judge, Rizwana Ghoghari had heard his bail plea on Friday but had reserved its order for a day. On Saturday, the court turned down Sabariya’s bail plea.

The decision of the Morbi court comes a couple of day after Gujarat High Court denied bail to other four accused in the case on November 1. The Dhrangadhra MLA was arrested by police after his name cropped up in the course of investigation of an alleged irrigation scam in Morbi district.
