Jeremy Corbyn's son Seb 'is demoted in John McDonnell's office after influx of hard-left advisers into Shadow Chancellor's team'

  • Claims today he has been demoted as part of a reshuffle in McDonnell's team
  • McDonnell has dismissed claims of a rift between him and Jeremy Corbyn

Jeremy Corbyn's son Seb has been demoted in shadow chancellor John McDonnell's team amid a feud at the top of the party, it was claimed today.

Mr McDonnell has recruited a series of new left-wing advisers in recent weeks while ramping up his media profile.

The changes have led to a demotion for Seb Corbyn, the Sunday Times claimed today.

A source said: 'Seb basically got demoted.

'That's another of the reasons why Jeremy and John fell out. He used to be his chief of staff. Seb basically works in the office without a title.'

Mr McDonnell ridiculed claims of a split between him and Mr Corbyn today.

He told Radio 5Live: 'Every autumn, the clocks go back, we celebrate Diwali or November the fifth, and then there's this story about a split between me and Jeremy.

'One year there was a story about how I was held in ransom, kidnapped him to prevent him resigning, in the same week I was launching a coup against him. This is farcical.'

Asked if he was launching a coup, Mr McDonnell jibed: 'Don't be daft. This is what you don't understand. We've worked together for nearly 40 years.

'We talk every day; we've never had a political disagreement. You just don't understand socialist solidarity. I'll take you on a training course.'

This week Mr Corbyn faced a revolt by 20 of his MPs tonight after he ordered them to abstain on tax cuts for the wealthy in line with Mr McDonnell's Budget strategy.

The Labour leader tried and failed to amend Chancellor Philip Hammond's plans to cut income taxes for 32 million workers, including those on the higher rate.

MPs included Yvette Cooper, Lisa Nandy, David Lammy and Mike Gapes were among those to defy Mr Corbyn as a Labour civil war over the Budget burst into public view.

Mr Hammond's plans survived a series of votes to pass the Commons on Thursday night and end a four-day debate on his £100billion giveaway.

His financial package saw him put hundreds of pounds back in the pockets of millions of workers, and pump money into the NHS

However, massive splits have emerged in Labour over how to respond to the Budget, with Jeremy Corbyn and his ally John McDonnell at loggerheads.

The shadow chancellor initially said the party would support an increase in the higher rate tax threshold to £50,000 from next April, which will hand billions of pounds to bigger earners.
