Shooting in Lucknow for the film Family of Thakurganj, actor Nandish Singh took some time out to celebrate Diwali with underprivileged kids in Jankipuram area on Saturday evening.
“This year, the only thing that was going on my mind was that since I am in Lucknow around Diwali, I will not get time to spend with kids of an orphanage that I go to every year in Mumbai. That aspect of my festival celebration was missing this year,” said Nandish, adding, “But as luck would have it, I got a chance to celebrate Diwali before the festival with underprivileged kids in Lucknow too.
It was a very good experience.”

Nandish adds, “Every year, I spend time with such kids on Diwali because these kids are actually so innocent and you can see the sparkle in their eyes burning an anaar or a phuljari lighting up. This school for underprivileged that I visited this time in Lucknow, wahan pe all the kids were so decked up for the festival wearing their best dresses. And their eyes were on the crackers only. Nobody was interested in food or other goodies, sabki aankhein pathakon pe hi gadi hui thi. My Diwali celebrations just got brighter celebrating it with these kids in Lucknow.”

The actor had a really good time with the kids at this school for underprivileged. “They were so well -mannered. A few also recited poems for me. It took them some time to open up to me, but later on we had a blast bursting crackers. Every anaar that we lit, they would shout on top of their voices in excitement. Unko dekh ke hi asli Diwali ka mazaa aa gaya,” said Nandish.
Recalling how he used to celebrate Diwali as a kid, Nandish said, “Just like everyone living in India, Diwali for me too has been really huge since childhood. It used to be even more important than my birthday. Every I year I used to look forward to celebrating Diwali as birthday toh used to be on just one day but Diwali celebrations would go one for so many days.”

And just like every other kid, he used to also pull pranks on people on Diwali. “Playing pranks with people using crackers used to be that one thing that I would do during Diwali. Woh chup-chap pathake jalana when someone is passing by, uss shaitani mein mazaa aata tha. The entire vibe of Diwali is so good. My dad used to get fire crackers in wholesale for Diwali and that time the crackers used to be really cheap. We used to get the bombs that we get for 150 rupees for just 5 rupees. Plus, there was a village near our place, where we used to get desi fire crackers with loud noise. My dad would take his jeep and would come back with a jeep full of crackers. As a kid, I used to love that smell of crackers. I don’t know why, but I used to love that dhuan ka smell. But now my craze for crackers has faded away, more so because of this pollution thing, but as a shagun every year, I still burn the anaar, phirki and phuljari in my house,” recalls Nandish.

Another thing that he would love as a kid was the food cooked by his mom on Diwali. “Diwali mein we get to eat so much of home-cooked good food. And I am a complete foodie. I only know how I control my urge to eat to eat during Diwali as I am on diet mostly now. I also have a sweet tooth, so I love eating mithais on Diwali,” said Nandish.

And true to that, Nandish enjoyed a hearty meal of chhole puri and sweets with the kids at the shelter home. Later, he also distributed stationery to kids as a gift for Diwali.
