Diwali special: Battle of the black apparel

While some went for classic, vibrant tones, others stepped out in onyx-coloured ensembles

KARACHI: Diwali celebrations are in full swing this week; complete with fireworks, rangoli and diyas. However, the decoration isn't the only thing that lit up this weekend as many Bollywood belles, too, shone in dazzling attires. While some went for classic, vibrant tones, others stepped out in black. From Katrina Kaif to Malaika Arora Khan, here are five divas that totally stunned in onyx-coloured ensembles.

Alia Bhatt

Alia looked radiant as ever clad in this black lehenga choli by Shyamal and Bhumika. The Raazi star teamed a cropped blouse with an embellished skirt and twinkling dupatta. The lehenga was ornamented with deep red, floral threadwork - with the flowers scattered at the top and denser at the bottom.

She accessorised with nothing other than gold jhumkas and a bindi. Her makeup was glowing with a dewy base, highlighted cheeks and glossy lips. Smoked out eyes and slicked down hair completed her look.

Katrina Kaif

Katrina sparkled in this breathtaking Sabyasachi garment at Shah Rukh Khan's Diwali bash. The Zero actor emanated sensual appeal garbed in a blouse featuring a rounded-off plunging neckline. The sleeves upped the sultriness, thanks to the skin peeping through the mesh and diamond-studded floral embossing. A sequinned belt kept the dupatta in place and cinched everything in.

She let the outfit do the talking and kept her hair, makeup and accessories minimal with a nude-toned face, straight hair and single- jewelled earrings.

Shraddha Kapoor

My favourite of the lot, Shraddha went for a flirtier ensemble for the evening celebrations this Diwali. The blouse was the star of the show with various details impeccably tied together. Its hem and neckline was cut to the natural shape of the florid embroidery while it also included a fishnet feature and glistening beadwork. The lehenga and dupatta was bordered with similar trimmings while the latter also entailed scattered beading on the organza.

Keeping in with the dallying charm, Kapoor had her hair in romantic waves while the makeup was kept within blushed tones with soft eyes, rosy cheeks and pink lips.

Malaika Arora

Malaika radiated in a fully traditional number comprising a customary blouse, banarasi lehenga and chiffon dupatta. The skirt saw extensive gold patterns, while the top accented a conventional cut.

The Chal Chaiyan Chaiyan star wore hefty accessories including oversized earrings, an elaborate maang teeka and kundan bangles with a matching ring. Her makeup, on the other hand, was toned down to keep the balance; with golden eyes and a nude pout. She rounded off the look with a gajra twisted into her plait. While I'm not too fond of her mien here, I have to give her credit for exuding old-world aura fit for the occasion.

Mira Rajput Kapoor

Mira's outfit was quite disappointing, as compared to the others. The new mummy was clothed in a simple, off-shoulder sari which was pretty underwhelming to say the least. No embellishments meant there was nothing exciting about the dress and the draped neckline did her no favours. The material of the garb, however, was gorgeous but there was nothing more to it.

She had her ombré hair in curls, rocked the no-makeup makeup look and accessorised with matching pear-shaped drop earrings.

Hit or miss: 5 looks Bollywood divas donned this week

While most of the five divas brought their A-game this week, for me, it was Shraddha who stole the spotlight. Her effortlessly amorous vibe is right up my street and the intricacy in her clothing had me mesmerised.
