Carey Mulligan reveals she suffered 'dehydration' after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding because she didn't drink any water amid fears she'd need the toilet

Carey Mulligan has revealed she suffered 'dehydration' after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding because she didn't drink any water before the ceremony.

The actress, 33, attended the royal nuptials at Windsor Castle in May alongside her husband, Mumford and Sons rocker Marcus Mumford, 31, and said she wanted to 'play it safe' so she didn't need a toilet break at a pivotal moment.

Speaking in an interview to air on Friday night's Graham Norton Show, the An Education star joked the couple got to the chapel early because they 'didn't think we should be later than Oprah Winfrey', resulting in a long period of waiting.

Talking about the star-studded royal occasion, she explained: 'We had a lovely day. We got there early because we didn't think we should be later than Oprah Winfrey.

'We had a two hour wait and I was really worried that there wouldn't be a toilet so I played it safe and I didn't drink anything.

'I was pretty dehydrated. It was a crazy day and I was super focused on just not falling over.'

Carey and her musician husband, who raise two children together, received invites to the Royal Wedding after being friends with Prince Harry for years.

The friendship formed back in 2013 when Prince Harry and his then-girlfriend Cressida Bonas were invited backstage at a Mumford and Sons' gig at London's Queen Elizabeth Park.

Carey has previously joked about how she was bombarded with '15,000 text messages' after Marcus went viral when he was seen yawning as the couple waited for the wedding to begin.

During an interview on The Jimmy Kimmel show last month, Jimmy asked: 'How does it work the royal wedding, are you friends with Harry and Meghan or do they just invite people who are famous?

Carey replied: 'No it's a friendship. We all got up at 5am but we got to our friends house and we were watching the TV and we saw Oprah going in.

'We were like if Oprah's there we can't be after Oprah, so we all hustled to the church and we got in but then it was like a two hour wait for everyone to come.

'It was lovely and atmospheric and beautiful but kind of a long time. There were cameras everywhere.

'We were all chatting with my friends and my husband was like "give us a kiss" and I was like "I'm not going to give you a kiss there's cameras" and he said "well George Clooney is here and Elton John is here and the Beckhams, they're not filming us."

Jimmy interrupted: 'I'm glad you brought this up because I do actually have a clip here of Marcus Mumford, your sweetheart.

As he brought up the clip, Carey cringed as the host narrated it, saying: 'We come to you and Marcus yawns.'

He then asked: 'So when something like that happens and the whole world is watching, did you know he was on?'

'No we were convinced there were so many absurdly famous people that we were not going to be allowed on camera at all,' Carey said.

'Of course it finishes and we are allowed to turn our phones back on. We have 15,000 messages going, "Marcus you yawned on TV!"'

Carey's next film, Wildlife, sees her portray sixties-era Montana housewife Jeanette Brinson.

The movie is based on the Richard Ford novel with the same name and is about a boy seeing the breakdown of his parent's marriage after his mother falls in love with someone else.

Asked about her new role on The Graham Norton Show, Carey revealed her role has been polarising views: 'Some people have been appalled by my character. It's interesting and has raised the question of how people view woman on screen.

She continued: 'If a man behaves badly it is okay but if a woman steps out of line it's kind of not okay.'

The film will be hitting UK cinemas on November 9.
