A 24-year-old engineer was shot dead by a businessman for allegedly having an affair with his daughter, in Saurikh area of Kannauj on Wednesday. Police said the accused, identified as Umesh Singh, was arrested on Thursday.
Police also recovered Umesh’s licensed double-barrel gun which was allegedly used to commit the murder, said Station House Officer, Saurikh police station, Raj Kumar Singh.
Two other accused are absconding, he added. A native of Bahadurpur village in Kannauj, Shivam Singh (24) was an engineer at a leather factory in Unnao. According to the FIR, Shivam and his cousin Mayank Shekhar had gone to a nearby market.
“On the day of Diwali, Shivam had gone to the local market along with his cousin Mayank to purchase some goods. While he was in a shop, Umesh and others arrived there. They initially started beating him up and later opened fire. A bullet hit Shivam’s chest and he fell on the ground while Mayank who was standing close and trying to rescue his brother, too, was shot at. He sustained bullet injury on his right hand,” said Circle officer, Tirwa area, Subodh Kumar Jaiswal.
Both the victims were rushed to the hospital where doctors declared Shivam brought dead. Mayank was discharged after the treatment.
“During preliminary investigation, it has come to light that Shivam was having an affair with Umesh’s daughter. Umesh and his family had regularly been issuing warnings to Shivam to end the affair for last two years. Six months back, the two families had also entered in an altercation over the issue,” added CO.
Shivam’s father Upendra Singh named Umesh, Deepak and Akash Singh in his complaint. Umesh, who was arrested from Nademau Road in the same area on Thursday, was produced before a local court the same day which sent him to jail. Police are conducting raids to trace Deepak and Akash, said the SHO.
