Provincial Police Commissioner Nneke Ledwaba has established a special task team to deal with criminal activities along the N1 following an incident of alleged attempted robbery which apparently led to an accident killing five people near Kranskop on Saturday.
According to Provincial Police Corporate Communications Head, Motlafela Mojapelo a truck driver pulled off the road between Modimolle and Kranskop at about 02:30 after experiencing some mechanical problems to his vehicle. While the driver was stationery two suspects emerged from the bush and attempted to rob him but he immediately accelerated. The suspects allegedly fired several shots at the truck, according to Mojapelo.
He indicated that a Toyota crashed into the rear of the truck when the driver moved onto the road surface in an attempt to flee the suspects. While the occupants of the Toyota were trying to free themselves from the wreckage two other vehicles ploughed into the the vehicle killing five people, according to Mojapelo who added that the truck driver did not stop at the accident scene but proceeded to the Mookgophong Police Station to report the incident.
Cases of attempted armed robbery, attempted murder and culpable homicide are being investigated.
In a press statement Premier Stan Mathabatha expressed his concerns about the recent incident and indicated that the province cannot afford continuing losing lives on the N1.
Provincial Government together with the National Department of Transport are expected to hold a national prayer day near Mookgophong to assist in the spiritual cleansing of the road next Sunday.
