Gonda deputy chief medical officer Dr Gayasul Hassan (48), who was also officiating CMO of the district, allegedly hanged himself at his home Monday morning.

His family claimed he was under a lot of pressure at work and was tense since he was handed CMO charge around two weeks ago. He and his wife Heena had two sons aged 16 and 18 years.

“His wife said he had dinner with the family the previous night and was listening to music till late. She woke up in the morning and found his body hanging from a tree in the lawn…,” said Gonda SP Lallan Singh.

The body was sent for post-mortem, and the report said ‘ante-mortem hanging’ was the cause of death. No suicide note has been found, the SP said, adding that Hassan had tried to commit suicide 2-3 years ago by setting himself on fire, but had been saved.

Speaking to the media, Heena said her husband had been “frustrated” ever since he was handed the CMO charge. She added that he had requested his seniors not to hand over the CMO’s official phone number to him.

Festive offer

“He did not sleep at night…He was facing too much pressure as he had the responsibility of the whole district. He had told us that as CMO sir is out of station for training, he was not able to do his own work,” Heena told reporters.

The CMO returned to work Monday, said police.
