ABC drama sees bump in Sydney radio ratings, but 2GB still in front

By Robert Moran

While the inter-office turmoil continues in Ultimo, the ABC's drama is at least having a winning effect on its radio listeners.

ABC Sydney's Robbie Buck and Wendy Harmer earned the biggest bounce in the competitive breakfast radio slot, up 1.8 per cent to a 10.7 per cent audience share.

It's a significant jump, and one echoed across the station's various timeslots, according to the latest Sydney radio ratings.

The survey period, the year's penultimate, took in dates from August 19 to November 3, which included the late September drama that saw the departures of former ABC bosses Michelle Guthrie and Justin Milne. Last month also saw the resignation of ABC radio boss Michael Mason.

Despite the public broadcaster's strong showing, 2GB maintains its dominance across Sydney radio.

Alan Jones again leads in the breakfast slot, despite suffering a 1.5 per cent loss to fall back to a 17.5 per cent audience share.

Jones's AM stablemate Ray Hadley also suffered a 2.5 per cent drop in the latter morning slot, but overshadows his competition with a 17.7 per cent audience share.

The swings continued on the FM dial, with WSFM's Jonesy and Amanda – who had claimed the breakfast spot from perennial leaders Kyle and Jackie O just two surveys ago – suffering a 2.1 per cent drop to fall to a 7.2 per cent audience share, further behind the KIIS FM duo's 10.7 per cent share.

Nova 96.9's Kate, Tim and Marty maintain their lead in the afternoon drive slot, despite dropping one per cent to an 11.8 per cent audience share.

Also in the drive slot, ABC Sydney's Richard Glover continued the public broadcaster's strong result, with his audience share jumping 2.7 per cent to a 9 per cent share.

Elsewhere, Chris Bath's evening program on ABC Sydney experienced the biggest jump of the survey, up a whopping 4.2 per cent to a 14.1 per cent audience share, enough to mount a challenge to 2GB's Steve Price (16.4 per cent share), while the ever-struggling 2DayFM saw some promising climbs across the day, including Ed Kavalee and Grant Denyer's breakfast show which climbed a full point to a 4.6 per cent share.
