PATNA: Unidentified criminals shot dead Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP)’s Paliganj block president Amit Bhushan Verma alias Tuktuk at Mera village under the Khiri Mor police station area of western Patna around 10.30pm on Tuesday.
This was fourth case of killing of RLSP leaders in Bihar since April this year. Two of these murders took place in Patna district.
RLSP president and Union minister Upendra Kushwaha visited Mera village to console the bereaved family on Wednesday morning.
“Criminals are ruling the roost and people are feeling helpless. It’s still being claimed it’s ‘sushasan’ in Bihar,” Kushwaha told newsmen.
The 35-year-old, appointed RLSP block president only a fortnight back, was shot when he was watching a cultural programme organised on the occasion of Chhath. However, the crowd could not know about the firing and the assailants managed to escape on foot without resistance.
Even the Khiri Mor police station SHO, who was at the spot to supervise security arrangements for the festivities, could not know about the crime immediately.
Paliganj SDPO Manoj Kumar Pandey said the criminals, suspected to be two in number, used the hustle and bustle associated with the festivities as the cover to escape. “Three people standing near the RLSP leader did witness the killing, but they could not see the faces of assailants due to darkness,” the SDPO said and added Verma received four gunshot injuries.
“Verma had a clean background. He was the proprietor of a water purifier and bottling plant in Arwal district,” the SDPO said.
Verma’s father, in his FIR, has said his son did not have enmity or dispute with anyone. Further investigations are on, said the SDPO.
