Digital Realty has snapped up another 1.4-hectare site at Erskine Park in Sydney’s west, where it will build the third data centre in what is becoming a rapidly expanding campus.

The company today opened the second facility at the site, known as Digital Erskine Park II, which has 7000 square metres of space and an IT power capacity up to 17.4 megawatts.

But it is also looking ahead to the construction of what will become Digital Erskine Park III.

“The new site was strategically selected to provide easy network and operations access from the company's existing Erskine Park facilities,” the company said in a statement.

“Design and planning work for the new 12-megawatt facility is expected to begin shortly, with incremental capacity scheduled to be delivered by 2020, subject to planning approval and customer demand.”

Digital Realty said it would employ up to 500 local contractors during construction of the new facility.

“Once fully operational, the data centre will provide up to 30 additional permanent roles, including facilities managers, engineers, security personnel and additional contractors,” it said.

Digital Realty’s chief financial officer Krupal Raval said the time was right to further expand the company’s Sydney presence.

“Given the fantastic market demand we have seen for our newest facility that just opened, we have already started the design and planning process for the next phase of our Erskine Park connected campus,” he said.

“We expect to break ground soon, with the goal of delivering our next data centre for customers requiring critical IT space in Sydney by 2020."
