She knows her bullets, guns and bikes: Shriya Pilgaonkar on playing Sweety in Mirzapur

Shriya Pilgaonkar, who was a part of Shah Rukh Khan's Fan, is looking forward to her new web series, Mirzapur. Shriya will also be seen in Anubhav Sinha's Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai and Gurinder Chaddha's British period drama, Beecham House.

Shriya Pilgaonkar is excited about her new web series Mirzapur where she plays the character of Sweety. And from what we saw in the trailer, Sweety is sweet, yet fierce.

“I am very happy because the character I am portraying is very different from what I have done before. Sweety is not as sweet as her name comes across,” the actor said in an exclusive chat with indianexpress.com.

“Sweety is a feisty, fearless girl who has no inhibitions. She is a big supporting factor in her sister (Shweta Tripathi) and Guddu’s (Ali Fazal) life. I love the fact that she knows her bullets, her guns and her bikes because I learned how to ride the bike for this show. Hopefully, I have done justice to it,” she added.

Mirzapur is an Amazon Prime Original and has an ensemble cast of Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Vikrant Massey, Divyendu Sharma, Amit Sial, Shweta Tripathi and Rasika Duggal. The gangster drama begins streaming from November 16.

“The great thing about Mirzapur is that no one character is clear black or white, every character is working in a grey shade,” Shriya said. “Ali and I were in the same college. Shweta and I also know each other because of theatre. So, these are all actors whose work I love very much,” she added.

Festive offer

Talking about the placement of female characters in a show which primarily is male-dominated, Shriya opined, “Mirzapur’s female characters are very strong, liberated women. Infact, the boys are leaning on us and we are contributing to the plot in a very strong manner. All of us are shown as women who are making choices for themselves and how they are affecting characters around them.”

Shriya, who has been part of Shah Rukh Khan starrer Fan, also has Anubhav Sinha’s next film Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai lined up, apart from Gurinder Chaddha’s British TV series Beecham House. Her other web series 13 Mussourie is also streaming on Viu currently.

“For me, the focus will always be to show my versatility. And sometimes you need to spoon-feed people to show them what you are capable of,” she said while talking about her varied projects.

Though her parents Sachin and Supriya Pilgaonkar are veteran actors in both films and television, Shriya confesses to deliberately keeping away from the small screen. “Television is something that requires a totally different time commitment. That’s a different space altogether and it’s really nice that people are not comparing or pitting mediums against one another. No one is looking down on television. For me, films are my priority for sure and web has its own fun,” she said.

Revealing that she prefers to have a detailed conversation with her parents, before finalising a project, Shriya further said she would jump at any opportunity of sharing screen space with them.” Because of dates, we are rarely together, so any chance for us to work together, where we are together, we will do it,” she said.

After Mirzapur, Shriya wants to do an entertaining film. “After so many dramatic roles, I am now dying to do an out and out song and dance film,” she signed off.
