Cyclone Gaja likely to make landfall near Nagapattinam tonight, Chennai receives light rain

Cyclone Gaja is expected to make landfall around Nagapattinam between 8.30pm and 11.30pm tonight. The cyclone has turned into a severe cyclone and moved towards the coast at 17kmph in the last six hours and is now 320km away from Chennai and 300km away from Nagapattinam, according to a report by India Meteorological Department in the morning.

CHENNAI: Cyclone Gaja is expected to make landfall around Nagapattinam between 8.30pm and 11.30pm tonight.
The cyclone has turned into a severe cyclone and moved towards the coast at 17kmph in the last six hours and is now 320km away from Chennai and 300km away from Nagapattinam, according to a report by India Meteorological Department in the morning.
Deputy director general of regional meteorological centre S Balachandran said the cyclone’s landfall would be around Nagapattinam and within the range of Pamban and Cuddalore.
"The eye of the itself is 200km, " he added.
Rain in Chennai
Chennai received light rain on Thursday. The IMD forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers in some areas of the city in the next 24 hours. The sky would be generally cloudy.
The Greater Chennai Corporation said it was prepared to face the cyclone.
