Senators, Matt Duchene’s agent have held contract discussions

Ron MacLean, Nick Kypreos, Elliotte Friedman and Chris Johnston get you all caught up on the latest new in the NHL on this week's rendition of Saturday Headlines.

The recent Uber scandal might not deter the Ottawa Senators from signing Matt Duchene to a contract extension.

Duchene’s agent, Pat Brisson, recently met face to face with Senators brass for the second time this season to discuss a new contract for his client, Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston reported Saturday during the Headlines segment of Hockey Night in Canada.

The 27-year-old centre, whose current cap hit is $6 million, is slated to become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

Ottawa’s other significant pending UFA is Mark Stone. The skilled two-way winger signed a one-year, $7.35-million deal in the summer as an RFA.

Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos reported that there hasn’t been any significant contract talks to date between Stone’s representation and Senators management but that talks could pick up in mid-December. Stone, 26, isn’t eligible to sign a new contract until Jan. 1.

“Whatever the demand is, both these players are gonna want a significant signing bonus,” Kypreos added.
