Bhagalpur cops seize 5,616 bottles of liquor

BHAGALPUR: The Bhagalpur police arrested a man and seized 171 cartons containing 5,616 bottles of different brands of foreign liquor from a truck on Friday.
Police said the consignment was being transported from Madhya Pradesh.
Acting on a tip-off about the movement of the truck, sources said, Bhagalpur SSP Ashish Bharti had directed the police station SHOs to check private as well as commercial vehicles.
On Friday, the Nathnagar police intercepted the truck and an SUV near Purani Sarai locality and recovered the 171 cartons clandestinely cellared in the rear of the truck.
“During the checking of the truck, the SUV carrying suspected smugglers sped away,” a police officer said on Saturday and added the SUV had been escorting the truck to an unknown destination in the district.
The arrested man was identified as Md Aslam Khan. According to police, the truck is registered in the name of Vinod Kumar Pawar of Bulandshahr in UP. “We are now looking for two suspects – Jitan and Bumbum,” the officer said.
SSP Bharti said police recovered two mobile phones from the arrested man. “We are gathering call detail records to reach the others involved in the crime,” he said and aded the involvement of the truck owner was also being probed.
The sale and consumption of liquor is prohibited in Bihar under the amended Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act, 2016.
