West Bengal: BJP state president’s car attacked in Hooghly, party blames TMC

While the saffron party blamed the ruling party for the incident, the Trinamool Congress denied the allegations.

BJP state president Dilip Ghosh’s convoy was attacked by unidentified miscreants in Hooghly district Sunday when he was returning from a party rally. Though his security personnel managed to save him, actor-turned-politician and BJP leader, Joy Banerjee, whose car was behind Ghosh’s vehicle allegedly faced the wrath of the attackers. Banerjee was reportedly injured when a stone hit his head and his car was vandalised.

While the saffron party blamed the ruling party for the incident, the Trinamool Congress denied the allegations.

“The Trinamool workers started pelting stones and I was hit. The glass window of my car was smashed. Our leadership has informed the matter to the office of Union home minister, Rajnath Singh. We will also file a complaint at the local police station,” Banerjee told the mediapersons.

Blaming the ruling party for the alleged attack, Sayantan Basu, BJP state secretary, said, “We will take out protest rallies in all districts of Bengal Monday. TMC goons tried to kill our leader. They are trying to unleash terror. Imagine what would happen if we retaliate.” BJP sources said they will lodge a police complaint Monday.

Trinamool’s district president in Hooghly, Tapan Dasgupta, however, denied involvement of his party workers behind the incident. “I am aware of what actually happened but our party workers were not involved in the incident. This is a got-up game. They are trying to brew a controversy,” said Dasgupta.

Festive offer

Earlier, while addressing a rally on Sunday afternoon, Ghosh slammed the TMC over various issues. “We generally do not want to engage in fighting. But that does not mean that we cannot retaliate,” said Ghosh.

“Attacks on political leaders and workers is unwanted and we condemn it. However, I have been listening to the language he (Ghosh) uses in his speech. That is not what a political leader should say,” said Somen Mitra, State Congress president.

This is the second time Ghosh’s car was attacked. On September 17, the BJP state chief’s car was attacked at Contai in East Midnapore district.
