Temperatures are set to plummet tonight as the winter weather sets in across Scotland.

After a mild spell over the last couple of weeks the mercury will drop below freezing as daytime temperatures struggle throughout the rest of the week.

Forecasters from the Met Office have also predicted rain showers through the course of the week, however snow could fall in some places as well.

The temperatures across Scotland are set to plummet below freezing

The north of the country looks as if it will be hit by the lowest temperatures with Inverness only managing to reach -1C tonight.

Further south in Glasgow the mercury is expected to drop to 0C tonight after a maximum of 11C today.

Throughout the week Glasgow is likely to remain dry with maximum temperatures of 7C in the daytime, however it will also remain bitterly cold during the evenings.

The Met Office said: "A few showers are likely to the east of Glasgow, but most places remain dry with clear spells.

"A touch of frost is possible across sheltered parts of Argyll. Minimum temperature 0 °C."

As the week gets cooler forecasters have predicted there could be a chance of snowfall in the more mountainous parts of the country.

The mercury is not expected to go above 7C throughout the course of the week

Steven Keates, meteorologist at the Met Office told the Daily Mirror, said: "There will be some cloud and showers, but the biting wind will make it feel even colder than it is, particularly in the east.

"West is best in terms of the weather this week. There could be some snowfall in the more mountainous areas, the peaks, but we shouldn't expect too much disruption."
