The 2020MY Hyundai Palisade shares its platform with the Kia Telluride (winner of WCOTY 2020)

The 2020 Hyundai Palisade 7-seater SUV is a brilliant package. It has garnered the praises of many critics and the US market has proved to be a runaway success for the mid-size three-row crossover (in American standards). Much like the lesser Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, the 2020MY Palisade shares its platform with Kia Motor’s Telluride, which recently won the prestigious World Car Of The Year (WCOTY 2020) award.

Now, the SUV has made a new benchmark in terms of safety. In US NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) crash tests, both the FWD and AWD variants of the Hyundai Palisade has achieved a five-star rating in frontal- and side-impact categories. Furthermore, it has attained the highest possible overall rating in the tests carried out by NHTSA (National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration).

Hyundai Motor has loaded its premium SUV with a host of advanced safety features. The list includes (and is not limited to) Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance Assist, Lane Following Assist, Safe Exit Assist, Driver Attention Warning, High Beam Assist and Smart Cruise Control (with Stop and Go function). The Hyundai Palisade comes with seven airbags as standard.

Hyundai’s Rear Occupant Alert is an interesting safety addition. It monitors the rear seats using ultrasonics and lets the driver know if there is any suspicious movement from the occupants. The system aims to prevent children and pets from being left behind in the vehicle by mistake.

In global markets, the 2020 Hyundai Palisade (and Kia Telluride) is available with just one engine option — a 3.8-litre NA V6 GDi petrol mill good for 291bhp and 355Nm of torque. This is mated to an 8-speed torque-converter automatic transmission which powers either the front axle or all four wheels.

Neither Hyundai nor Kia has any plans to bring the Palisade or Telluride to the Indian market anytime soon. Over the years, Hyundai India’s premium products such as the old Terracan, Tucson or Santa Fe have never really worked on the market. However, Kia Motors India might be able to tell a different story if the Telluride is introduced (with a favourable diesel power plant) since it has already received the appeal of being a premium brand in the country.

Kia Motors India made its debut in August, last year. Meanwhile, MG Motor India set foot on the market a couple of months before Kia and plans to launch the Gloster premium SUV soon.
