It’s a comeback year for Google and McKinsey at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), said placement cells at the country’s premier engineering schools. After a break of more than two and three years, respectively, they will be participating again in final placements at the IITs.

“Two years after going off campus, Google is back,” said Raja Sekhar GP, chairman of the career development centre at IIT Kharagpur. “They want to have good relations with the IITs and are likely to make a good number of offers.” Google is visiting the IITs at Delhi, Chennai, Kanpur, Mumbai, Kharagpur, BHU, Roorkee and Guwahati.

Google and McKinsey didn’t respond to queries.

Having switched to off-campus recruitment, it appears they don’t want to miss out on the best graduates this year and have decided to join other companies in the placement drive at various campuses.

“McKinsey and Google are both participating in the final placement process this year,” said Manu Santhanam, advisor, training and placement, IIT Madras. “This year, Google had even hired through the PPO (pre-placement offer) route.”

At the last All-IIT Placement Committee (AIPC) meeting in October, the schools had decided to discourage off-campus recruitments. The IITs don’t want companies to cherry pick high performers before formal final placements to ensure a level playing field for all students.

“IITs do not have a policy for recruiting off campus. Students from IITs get good offers on campus itself, which is why many wouldn’t go the off-campus route and these companies were unable to tap into the entire pool of talent they wanted,” said a placement committee member at a top IIT.

Google is visiting IIT Roorkee for domestic roles and has been given a Day 1 slot. IIT (BHU), IIT Guwahati and IIT Delhi also confirmed that Google would be calling. “Earlier there were multiple tests and the process was long. Now the process is shorter,” said a member of the IIT Guwahati placement team.

McKinsey is in talks with IIT Delhi for placements and has confirmed its participation at IIT Madras. The consultancy firm will be visiting fewer schools than Google. IIT Roorkee, IIT Kanpur and IIT Kharagpur said McKinsey would not be part of final placements.

ET reported in 2016 that Google had chosen to bypass the placement process at IITs after almost a decade of hiring from campuses. McKinsey did so in 2015, as ET reported at the time, choosing to hire directly through its alumni network, website and social media. Such off-campus hiring has always been discouraged by the IITs.

In the past, Google has offered hires at IITs annual pay of around Rs 25 lakh for domestic roles and up to Rs 2 crore for international ones, including stock options, relocation allowance and joining bonus. In 2015, Google hired about 20 students from the top five IITs.
