NEW DELHI: A 27-year-old man was killed when an Uttarakhand Roadways bus rammed the scooter he was riding near Kashmiri Gate metro station in north Delhi on Tuesday. Police arrested the driver, but released him on bail later. The owner of the bus contracted to the Uttarakhand transport department has been summoned for questioning.
Narendra Kumar, a resident of Dehradun, in trying to overtake another vehicle on the left side of the road, lost control of his bus and hit a scooter that was also trying to do the same.
The 54-year-old driver was booked for causing death due to negligence under Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code, for rash driving under Section 279 and for causing grievous hurt under Section 337. The police have impounded the bus and transferred the case to the accident cell as per protocol.
Devender (27), a resident of Durgapuri Chowk in north-east Delhi, was on his way to attend a wedding with two friends, Imran and Wasim, riding pillion on his scooter. They were going from Seelampur towards the Tis Hazari Road. Right after they rode down the ISBT flyover round 6pm, their scooter was hit by the bus (UK 07 PA 2865). On colliding, the trio fell on the road. Before he could escape, Imran found himself beneath the wheels of the bus.
The area, which is notorious for being one of the most accident prone locations in the city, has two sharp turns near the metro station, which test the drivers' skills, especially if they are speeding.
At this point, buses also frequently try to muscle their way ahead of the traffic with dangerous manoeuvres on the left side of the road and have caused a number of accidents, a police officer noted.
While people raised an alarm after the accident, some of them chased and stopped the bus that had slowed down after going some distance, police said.
Police denied reports that the bus driver had tried to flee from the spot.
Someone informed the police control room and a van reached the accident spot. Police rushed the victims to the hospital, where Imran was declared brought dead. Devender and Wasim were admitted for medical treatment.
