HYDERABAD: Junior doctors demand immediate increase of security in emergency wards across government hospitals in the state following an attack on duty doctors at the Nizamabad government medical college and hospital on Wednesday. The doctors were attacked by the family members of a patient. One duty doctor was injured in the attack and equipment at the anaesthesia department damaged.
The incident took place at 3.30 am when a 39-week pregnant woman, admitted to the hospital with a cord prolapse and foetal distress, delivered a baby.

The baby suffered cord pulsations and had no heartbeat and was declared dead.
“Despite all efforts and resuscitation, the baby could not be revived. Although the family members were explained about the complications and had given high risk consent for the procedure, they attacked our doctors. In certain cases, it is not possible to save both mother and child but they refused to listen to us,” said Dr Arun K, an eyewitness.
Following the incident, the Telangana Junior Doctors’ Association (TJUDA) shot off a letter to the director of medical education to file an institutional FIR against the offenders and to increase security at the emergency departments with immediate effect. TJUDA has also decided to put forth demands of all medical associations in front of political parties.
“We urge parties to include demands to improve public health in their agenda and manifestos,” said TJUDA member Dr Anand S.
Meanwhile, all medical associations in the state decided to conduct ‘Telangana Vaidya Garjana’ on December 1 to discuss loopholes in the system and reforms needed in the healthcare sector.
