Snooker star Stephen Hendry has told how an invitation to give a lesson to the crown prince of Brunei was like a scene from comedy film Coming To America.

The seven-time world champion was at the top of his sport when he was invited to Al-Muhtadee Billah’s plush home in Hampstead, north London.

He compared it with the 1988 film, in which Eddie Murphy plays the son of the massively rich king of the fictional African nation of Zamunda.

Hendry, 49, said: “A convoy of three luxury cars appeared and he emerged, surrounded by security.

“It was like something from Coming To America.

“We played alternate shots on a competition-standard snooker table.

“I was given £5000 and a penknife inlaid with a diamond and a triangle of rubies. Not bad for an hour’s work.”

Hendry also revealed how he splashed his cash on fast cars and designer clothes.

He said: “When I spent, I really spent. Before I’d even passed my driving test I splashed out on a £17,000 Mercedes.

“No wonder the Versace shop in Glasgow welcomed me with champagne.”

Hendry, who left Scotland in 2014 after a bitter split from his ex-wife Mandy, moved to Berkshire with children’s entertainer Lauren Thundow, 29.

Hendry said the most unusual gift he has been given during his career was from artist Damien Hurst.

He added: “He promised that, if I beat John Higgins in the world championship, he would give me a monkey in a Perspex box.

“True to his word, he presented me with a marmoset, pickled in formaldehyde and dressed as a snooker player.”
