In Madhya Pradesh, the BJP led by Shivraj Singh Chouhan is eyeing a fourth straight term in office, while the Congress is hoping for a comeback in the state which was once its stronghold.
In 2013, the BJP won 165 seats, up 22 from the previous poll with a 44.88% vote share. The Congress came a distant second with 58 seats down 13 from 2008 and a vote share of 36.38%. The BSP could get only 4 which is 4%.

This time too the BJP is contesting all the 230 seats, while the Congress has fielded 229 candidates, leaving one seat, Jatara in Tikamgarh district, for its ally - Sharad Yadav's Loktantrik Janata Dal (LJD). The BSP has fielded 227 candidates, while the SP is contesting on 52 seats.

In MP, the Congress party tested its softer Hindutva brand to counter the BJP in its attempt to electorally ground the three-time incumbent regime of Chouhan, but many of its secular friends have expresseed doubts on whether this will work.

Opinion polls have given a narrow edge to the BJP. The Times Now- CNX opinion survey of November 8 projected the ruling BJP to emerge first with 122 out of a total 230 seats, just a few seats over the halfway mark of 115; and the Congress to come second with an improved tally of 95. Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is expected to win 3 seats and others - including Gondwana Gantantra Party (GGP), Samajwadi Party(SP), Left Front and Independents - the remaining 10.

Polling was held on November 28. The state registered a record 75 per cent voter turnout with especially long queues of women voters. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, in office since 2005, is seeking re-election from Budhni in Sehore district.

Counting of votes in Madhya Pradesh, as in the other 4 states where polls were held in this round - Rajasthan, Chattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram - will be on December 11.
