The New York headquarters of CNN have been evacuated following a bomb threat.

The news corporation's base at the Time Warner Center in Columbus Circle, Manhattan, was evacuated shortly after 10.30pm on Thursday night, the corporation said in a statement.

The New York Police Department bomb squad is on the scene while investigations are being carried out.

CNN said a call came in at 9.47pm claiming there were five bombs in the building.

CNN reporter Brian Stelter tweeted: "The NYPD is investigating a bomb threat near CNN NYC's office at Columbus Circle.

"Due to the threat, the office has been evacuated. Right now CNN is airing taped programming due to the disruption."

The evacuation came a short time after Donald Trump tweeted another attack on the media.

The President wrote: "FAKE NEWS - ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!"

He tweeted: "We were evacuated in the middle of my live show. Bomb threat. We’re running taped programming. NYPD is investigating. Stay tuned."

Police and fire department trucks have blocked all vehicle and pedestrian traffic on West 58th Street between 8th and 9th Avenue.

The bomb threat comes just weeks after CNN was targeted in a pipe bomb scare.

The network's bureau in the Time Warner Center was evacuated in October after a package with an explosive device, addressed to former CIA Director John Brennan, was discovered, officials said.
