GAYA: Eklavyya, the four-day interuniversity sports meet, got off to a colourful start with nearly 1800 young boys and girls participating in the march past and oath-taking ceremony to play the game in the best sporting traditions. However, governor- cum-chancellor Lalji Tandon, who was scheduled to open the sports meet, could not make it to the event. In the governor's absence, MU VC Prof Qamar Ahsan declared the meet open.
Asked about the reason for cancellation of the governor's programme, Magadh University sports director Brajesh Rai said though no reason has been officially given, the governor is learnt to have skipped the event for health reasons.
Overcoming their disappointment, participants from over a dozen universities of the state went ahead to give their best and maintain the traditions of true sportsmanship. The VC exhorted the youth to channelise their energy in the positive direction and treat sports as an integral part of overall education. The day's events included 800 meters race for boys and girls, kho-kho, kabaddi, volley ball, football, chess, badminton and table tennis. The event will conclude on December 9. Apprehending trouble from the recently retrenched daily wagers and other disgruntled elements engaged in fake degree racket, elaborate security arrangements have been made.
Even a section of regular employees of the university feels unhappy on account of digitisation of records, treasury payment, biometric attendance marking, purchases from central government approved e-market, scheduled transfer to Pataliputra University, inquiry into the expenditure made on the construction of Buddhist Studies Department and several other reasons.
