More than 80,000 people have signed a petition which calls for grief to be recognised with its own awareness day.

Professor Green, whose real name is Stephen Manderson, has launched the campaign for a National Grief Awareness Day to remember those we have lost.

The rapper was 24 when his father took his own life and Green has since gone on to talk openly about dealing with losing a loved one.

Alongside singer Rag 'n' Bone Man, Green has released a new song Photographs, which he dedicates to his dad.

The emotional track explains how he wishes that there were more photos of the two of them together.

By using the hashtag #wishthatitookmorephotographsofus on his own Instagram and Twitter account, the 35-year-old has inspired others to post their images too in a bid to open up the often silent conversation surrounding grief.

The petition was set up two weeks ago but after appearing on BBC Radio One on Sunday and Radio 5 Live on Thursday to talk about Photographs, momentum has gathered and the signatures are building fast.

On the Change.org page he wrote: "I’m Stephen, also known as Professor Green. I’ve been speaking a lot about grief lately - the grief of losing my dad and my nan.

"The thing about grieving is, it never stops. It’s something you learn is part of life once you’ve encountered death."

He then goes on to explain that the overwhelming social media response to his song made him realise that "we desperately need to talk more about grief."

He added: "I find it hard to believe we have had no other way of connecting our experiences of grief, no day on which we can celebrate the lives of those we mourn to remind us it’s okay to grieve, to stop us internalising our grief and sweeping it under the carpet until it manifests in a far more ugly way.

"That’s why I’m calling for a National Grief Awareness Day.

"This day will be an opportunity to call for more support and education around grief, and to give people a chance to remember and celebrate the lives of lost loved ones. It exists in the US already - there’s no reason we can’t do the same here."

Green's petition is being backed by Cruse, the leading national charity for bereaved people in the UK.

Many have since taken to Twitter to share the petition and show support to the rapper.

One said: "Just signed your petition for a national grief day. I think it’s a great idea & it’s about time something was done to raise awareness also it’s important for people to realise that it’s ok to grieve and not to have to sweep it under the carpet."

Another also recognised the importance of the images of loved ones themselves: "As a wedding photographer I often think how important certain photographs will be to someone one day, take more photos people!"
