A police team spotted an i20 car just before dawn. The team flagged the car down but the driver instead stepped on the gas and tried to break the police cordon.
NEW DELHI: The Special Cell of Delhi Police had been on their toes after three criminals, including notorious inter-state gangster Sonu Kharkhari, escaped even after a dramatic shootout at Dhaula Kuan metro station late on Tuesday.
The only clue left by the men was the Hyundai Creta, which interestingly had bloodstains on the inside. The cops had managed to catch one of the occupants, gangster Jitender Bhanja, without any injuries.
So, it was evident that the one of the other three occupants had sustained a gunshot wound.
The cops then took a shot at a plan which could go both ways. The cops were certain that the injured criminal would seek immediate medical help due to the bullet injury and thus could be caught while availing treatment.
DCP (Special Cell) Sanjeev Yadav formed 12 teams and asked them to contact all the nursing homes in bordering areas of southwest Delhi. Similarly, traps were laid outside hospitals in Gurgaon also.
The teams led by ACP Sanjay Dutt scattered across south and southwest Delhi and the network of informers were activated for any clue on the movements of these absconding criminals.
In the early hours of Friday, the police received a tip-off about Kharkhari and gang travelling in an i20 car in southwest Delhi. The teams were alerted and pickets set up at different places.
Inspector Tilak Bisht’s team was stationed on the Golf Course Road in
Dwarka and spotted an i20 just before dawn. The team flagged the car down but the driver instead stepped on the gas and tried to break the police cordon.
However, the cops had blocked the road with their cars and forced it to stop. Sonu Kharkhari alias Devender Kumar was found bleeding in the rear seat and rushed to DDU hospital. Two pistols and four cartridges were seized from the car, which was found to have been snatched from a businessman in Dwarka.
The other two were identified as Shekhar and Ravinder Dholu. The three were members of the infamous “Kranti gang”. The kingpin of this gang, Rajesh Bharti, and three others had been shot dead in a fierce encounter by Yadav’s team in south Delhi’s Chhatarpur a few months ago. Since then, Sonu and Jitender Bhanja, arrested on Tuesday, had been running the operations of the gang. There was a reward of of Rs 1 lakh each for their capture. Shekhar had a reward of Rs 50,000.
