NEW DELHI: Delhi government is planning to construct a 5.5km elevated corridor on the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road on a single pillar which will have two separate corridors for vehicles and metro.
The first corridor will have a motorway and the second will be a metro corridor. It will be a unique engineering project designed with the aim to take traffic to the sky for ease of movement in south Delhi.

The elevated corridor will start near Mehrauli and end near Badarpur. This stretch sees heavy traffic volume and has multiple signals that slow down traffic. Almost every day, the rush hour sees huge traffic snarls on the stretch and commuting becomes a nightmare.
The stretch is eight kilometres long and has four traffic signals at IGNOU Road, Mandir Marg, Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg, and Guru Ravidas Marg. A rough estimate says 4,000 to 5,000 vehicles pass through each traffic signal during the rush hour in the morning and evening every weekday.
“The elevated corridor will make the journey between Mehrauli and Badarpur signal-free. The travel time will be significantly reduced as a result,” said a source. PWD has prepared the design of the project.

This would be the second such transport infrastructure project in the country. The first one came up in Jaipur, which is a double elevated corridor on a single pillar. “The design was conceptualised because there is a dearth of space for the construction of separate corridors for metro and elevated road,” said a source, adding that this one would save space and money.
“Since both the corridors will stand on a single pillar, the project will need less funds as compared to constructing two separate corridors for metro and motorway,” the source said. The project is awaiting clearance.
The metro line between Tughlaqabad and Aerocity might go through this corridor in the fourth phase, which is yet to be approved.
PWD submitted the project proposal to Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning & Engineering) Centre or UTTIPEC, the approving authority for all transport infrastructure projects in Delhi. But sources said that the submission was not done in the prescribed format, which is why PWD has been asked to re-submit it.
Once UTTIPEC clears it, the process to collaborate with Delhi Metro would begin.
