Water main break in Morena leaves businesses flooded

At least four businesses in Moreana were flooded Friday when an eight-inch pipe burst, causing a big mess for people who work in the neighborhood.

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) - At least four businesses in Morena were flooded Friday when an eight-inch pipe burst, causing a big mess for people who work in the neighborhood.

According to the city officials, an eight-inch concrete water main broke sending water down West Morena Boulevard and Dorcas Street like a river.

Water came poured into four businesses, one of them BoxDrop Furniture & Mattress, which opened just nine months ago. Ryan Delano and Gigi Ross are the owners of BoxDrop Furniture and Mattress.

They have box mattresses and couches, all now soaked. “The front of the store looks like a fish tank. It is probably six-inches to a foot of water through the front and the back. I put my retirement into this store, and this is a huge setback for us,” said Ryan.

A fitness studio, machine shop and kitchen showroom were also damaged by water.

Hlai Ghazi is the owner of Kitchen Boutique. “Everything is full of water. I have computers in the water. All the cabinets are installed so all the wood is going to get damaged.”

Water also ripped through a shop that sells high end brakes and drag racing car parts. Then it came pouring onto the streets and sidewalks just off Morena Boulevard.

It could take crews up to eight hours to repair, clean and restore water to customers, according to city officials.

The water main was behind the businesses in an alley and the street buckled when the line burst, pushing the concert up. It remains unclear whether or not the break had anything to do with the latest rain storm or if the aging played a role.
