Delhi-based defence analyst Abhijit Iyer-Mitra reached Chennai from here on Friday after he was released on bail in two cases that were pending against him in Odisha .

His counsel Nikhil Mehra told The Hindu that Mr. Iyer-Mitra, who is unwell, was not ill-treated during his 44-day-long judicial custody. He may have to undergo surgery, if needed, he said.

The cases against the defence analyst would end only after the two trial courts accept the withdrawal applications that have been filed by the prosecution, said Mr. Mehra.

Mr. Iyer-Mitra, who was arrested on October 23 for his alleged derogatory and objectionable comments on art and culture of Odisha, was discharged from the Capital Hospital in the city where he was undergoing treatment since Sunday.

He was released on Thursday evening after he was granted conditional bail by the Court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class at Konark in Puri district and the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate, Bhubaneswar, in Khordha district on Thursday.

While granting bail to Mr. Iyer-Mitra on Wednesday, the High Court had ordered the two lower courts to impose conditions as they deem proper to release him.

Both the courts granted bail to Mr. Iyer-Mitra on furnishing a local security for ₹20,000 each and on the condition that he would not commit a similar offence in the future.

Accepting Mr. Iyer-Mitra’s plea, the Odisha government had on Tuesday decided to take steps to withdraw the cases pending against him.
