Though English is an international language and plays a key role in one’s academic life and on the global platform, the younger generation should study in its mother tongue and acquire knowledge and skills to lead a self-reliant life, Nagabai Bulla, president of the 17th Kalaburagi District Kannada Sahitya Sammelan, has said.

Delivering her presidential address at the two-day District Kannada Sahitya Sammelan here on Saturday, Dr. Bulla said that English continues its predominance globally and its usage has become inevitable in the modern context. She, however, added that people should be committed to the development of their own language, land and the culture.

Dr. Bulla expressed concern over the tendency of neglecting Kannada and welcomed the State government’s decision to implement Kannada in administration and government offices.

Dr. Bulla hailed the Rashtrakuta kingdom as a protector and nurturer of Kannada language, literature and culture. “The contributions of the Rashtrakutas to the life and culture of Kannada is of utmost importance. Their glory reached the peak during the regime of Amoghavarsha Nrupatunga, who wrote the first classical work, Kavirajamarga,” she added.

Veerabhadra Simpi, district president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, writer Geeta Nagbhushan, Afzalpur MLA M.Y. Patil and others were present.

Earlier, Social Welfare Minister Priyank Kharge flagged off the procession at Nagareshwar Girls High School at Nehru Gunj in the city.

The procession showcasing the rich folklore of the region reached Bapugouda Darshnapur Auditorium, the venue of the sammelan.
