More domestic and international services will be launched by major airline companies in the country from the Kannur international airport.

This was announced by Civil Aviation Secretary Kamal Nayan Choubey at the inaugural function of the airport here on Sunday. Observing that the new airport was a shining example of co-operative federalism in the country, he said that it should be ensured that the airport was connected by UDAN, the regional connectivity scheme.

Mr. Choubey said that SpiceJet would soon connect Kannur with Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Indigo, another major Indian airline company, had proposed to connect Kannur with Mumbai and New Delhi, he said, adding that Indigo will take some more time in deciding their schedule.

Within a year

“As per a directive of the Prime Minister, we have already granted permission for many services within the next 12 months,” he said.

The services include Air India Express’ weekly four flights each to Muscat and Doha, three flights to Riyadh, and daily flights to Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah.

He said a daily flight by Jet Airways from here to Abu Dhabi was also proposed.

IndiGo would operate daily flight to Dubai, Dammam, Jeddah and Go Air would operate daily flights to Muscat, Dammam, and Abu Dhabi, Mr. Choubey added.

“No other greenfield airport has witnessed this kind of demand. We will ensure that Kannur becomes one of the major international airports in the country,” Mr. Choubey said
