Bhopal: It has been a close battle between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress in Madhya Pradesh. According to the Election Commission’s latest trends, the Congress is leading in 113 seats, and the BJP in 110.

The election was held in the state on November 28 and 75% of the 5.03 crore voters exercised their franchise. At least 2,716 candidates are contesting for the 200 seats.

The Congress and BJP poll campaign was led by party president Rahul Gandhi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, respectively. The Congress had appointed veteran Kamal Nath as the Madhya Pradesh party chief in April, and named Jyotiraditya Scindia as the campaign leader.

In the 2013 polls, BJP had bagged 165 seats while Congress and BSP got 58 and 4. Three seats went to the independents. The BJP has been in power in Madhya Pradesh for last 15 years.

This time, among all political stakeholders, the outcome is most significant for the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP. Tuesday’s result could give a peek into whether the electoral momentum is in the favour or against BJP ahead of the 2019 general elections.

According to the results and latest trends available, the Congress tally in the 230-member House is 111 (won 13 and leading in 98 seats), while BJP is a close second with 110 (won 15 seats and leading in 96 constituencies). In the 2013 poll, the BJP had won 165 seats, securing a comfortable majority in the Assembly, while confining the Congress to 58 seats.

12 Cabinet ministers trailing

A dozen ministers in the Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led BJP government in Madhya Pradesh were trailing in the state Assembly polls according to the latest trends, an election official said on Tuesday. Minister Narottam Mishra was trailing by a margin of 6,200 votes in Datia while Rustam Singh was at the third position in Morena constituency, PTI reported. Balkrishna Patidar was trailing in Khargone by a margin of 3,792 votes, while Lal Singh Arya was lagging behind by 6,552 votes in Gohad seat in Bhind district. Minister Om Prakash Dhurve was trailing by a margin of 8,255 votes in Shahpura seat of Dindori district while Antar Singh Arya was trailing by 3,626 votes in Sendhwa seat of Barwani district.

State finance minister Jayant Mallaiya trailing

Deepak Joshi was behind by 3,070 votes in Hatpipliya seat in Dewas district, while Rampal Singh was trailing by 3,063 votes in Silvani seat in Raisen district. Minister Archana Chitnis was also trailing in Burhanpur seat by a margin of 1,055 votes. State finance minister Jayant Mallaiya was behind by 1,336 votes in Damoh seat. Another minister, Sharad Jain, was trailing by a margin of 7,958 votes in Jabalpur North seat and Jaibhan Singh Pawaiya by 5,489 votes in Gwalior seat.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s nephew Anoop Mishra trailing

Former prime minister late Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s nephew and Morena BJP MP Anoop Mishra, who contested the election on the BJP’s ticket, was trailing from Bhitarwar seat in Gwalior district by 2,255 votes, an election official said. Leader of Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly Ajay Singh was also trailing by a margin of 3,032 votes from Churhat seat in Satna district.

Trends in 226 out of the total 230 assembly seats showed the Congress leading in 110 seats and the BJP ahead in 108 constituencies, PTI reported. Besides, Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) was leading in four seats, while the Samajwadi Party was ahead in one. Independents were also leading in two seats in the central Indian state.

Yashodhara Raje Scindia leads

Sports minister Yashodhara Raje Scindia is leading by 7,757 votes from the Shivpuri constituency at the end of the fourth round of counting.

Trends reflect people’s desire for change: Scindia

With trends indicating that the Congress was ahead in the assembly polls in three Hindi heartland states, senior party leader Jyotiraditya Scindia said the figures reflected the people’s desire for a change, reports PTI. Scindia, who spearheaded the Congress campaign in Madhya Pradesh, said he was very confident that the Congress would form the government in the state. Asked about posters being put up that Kamal Nath would be chief minister, Scindia said: “Lets not put the cart before the horse. Let us wait for the verdict."He said the trends reflected the people’s desire for a change.

Strict vigil for counting process

■ Around 15,000 employees have been drafted for the counting process, which will be monitored through 1,200 CCTV cameras installed at 51 centres across the state, according to Madhya Pradesh chief electoral officer VL Kantha Rao.

Smaller parties in focus

■ The focus is on smaller parties and independent candidates and senior leaders in both parties confirmed on condition of anonymity that they were working on permutations and combinations to finalise plans to ensure they could get their support to form government if required.

Key candidates and battles

Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is hoping to retain power for the fourth time in a row.

The Congress and the BJP are likely to face a tough fight from Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party (SP). The BJP fielded candidates for all 230 seats while the Congress contested 229, leaving one seat, Jatara in Tikamgarh district, for the Sharad Yadav-led Loktantrik Janata Dal (LJD).

All the leaders contesting the polls, including former Union ministers Suresh Pachauri and Arun Yadav. Leader of Opposition Ajay Singh is contesting from Churhat.

Kamal Nath on Monday expressed confidence that Congress will win more than 140 seats. “We will win more than 140 seats. Wait till tomorrow; everything will be clear by then."

Shivraj Singh Chouhan had, too, expressed confidence of the BJP winning the election.
