Make our primary school Christmas No.1! Pupils pen uplifting charity single in a bid to top the festive charts - and team up with care home residents for the VERY heartwarming video

A school that's been dubbed the 'happiest in the UK' has launched a charity single in a bid to reach Christmas number one.

Pupils and teachers at Flakefleet Primary School, which was given the accolade at the National Happiness Awards this month, have created their own single and video in the hope of bagging the coveted festive top spot - and raising money for the Alzheimer's Society 

The school in Fleetwood, Lancashire, hit the headlines earlier this year with a large scale reenactment of the Royal Wedding, while videos of them recreating the Fat Les Vindaloo video during the World Cup tournament racked up millions of views online.

Now the pupils are hoping to give the likes of Ariana Grande, currently riding high on the success of her hit Thank U, Next, and the winner of this year's X Factor - typically a front runner for the Christmas number one spot - a run for their money in the charts. 

Their song 'Light Up', which has won support from celebrities including Coronation Street star Lucy Fallon and singer Alfie Boe, focuses on 'giving the gift of time', and its heartwarming video brings together the pupils with elderly residents from a nearby care home.

Speaking about the idea behind the video, headteacher Dave McPartlin, who has been at the school for three years, said: 'The idea is to teach our kids anything is possible.

'If they can get a number one single they can practice their handwriting and reading. They can achieve anything.

'After the royal wedding we were thinking about what we could do next.

'I did an assembly and asked the children what their big dreams are. Our motto is 'dare to dream'. One child said they'd love to have a number one record.

'I thought "we could do that", and why go for a normal number one, why not go for the biggest one?

'We asked the kids for ideas for the message and they said it's great to get presents but they love doing stuff with their family.'

Explaining how the idea of supporting the elderly came about, he added: 'We have great links with a local care home so thought about supporting the elderly and those that are lonely. You don't have to have a lot of money you can still give the gift of time.

'All of the school has been involved in it. I think it's the most exciting thing I've ever been involved in.

'We have great links with a local care home so thought about supporting the elderly and those that are lonely,' headteacher Dave McPartlin said- pupils are seen performing the song

The song 'Light Up', which has won support from celebrities including Coronation Street star Lucy Fallon and singer Alfie Boe, is seen being performed on stage

'We genuinely believe we've got a chance because people love the underdog. We think we can take on Elton John, the X Factor or Jess Glynne.'

He added: 'I appreciate it sounds ridiculous but you have to dream.'

The lyrics to the catchy Light Up song were written by staff members while the song was recorded at a nearby secondary school.

The video, which has already clocked up tens of thousands of views on social media, was filmed over three days in Blackpool with residents from the nearby Fleetwood Hall Care Home.

Flakefleet is riding high after the 500 pupil school was crowned winner at Laughology's National Happiest Awards earlier this month.

Mr McPartlin said: 'When we found out we were shortlisted it was the best feeling ever.

'What makes us the happiest school is we try to make sure we look after the whole child developing confidence and resilience and teaching them aspiration and that extends to staff. A happy work force is five times more productive.'

The single was officially launched at a red carpet event on Thursday at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool where children from each class performed for parents and members of the public.

Mr McPartlin added: 'When I stood on the side of that stage I was the proudest headteacher in the world.'

The single is officially released on December 14 with all proceeds going to the Alzheimer's Society.
