Following a maximum temperature of 35C on Wednesday, a cool change brought a cold 18C forecast on Thursday.

The Bureau of Meteorology SA said the highest 24-hour rainfall totals up to 9am were in the South East, with 22mm at Mt Gambier Airport, 18mm at Padthaway and Robe and 15mm at Naracoorte.

More rain is expected by the end of today, with up to 8mm in metro areas and 10mm in the hills.

Senior Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Mark Analak says up to 40mm could fall in some areas before Saturday.

"Even into the Mount Lofty Ranges we could see those sort of falls, perhaps even a little bit more around the Victor Harbor and Strathalbyn area," he said.

"We could see falls of 30 to 60mm."

SA Police warned motorists to take care driving near Port Wakefield, with huge dust storms reducing visibility to just 20 metres. These are expected to last until the weekend.

South Australia is being hit by a low pressure system that is also causing turbulent weather in Victoria, says Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Claire Yeo.

"Tropical moisture coming from the north is feeding that system as it develops," she said.

"A cloud band with rain areas and thunderstorms is forecast over New South Wales, Victoria ... and southeast South Australia."

A gale warning is also in place for metro waters in South Australia as 60 km/h wind gusts were recorded at 5am.

"If you happen to be thinking about getting the tinny out today, probably not a good day for it," said senior forecaster Simon Timcke.

It is expected to heat up by Saturday with 24C and a slight chance of showers forecast.
