NEW DELHI: In September, the family of 20-year-old Samad was excited. Samad had received a call for a job interview in Bareilly, UP. On September 16, as he left home, with dreams for the future, his family wished him luck and asked him to come back in two days. But fate had other plans.
Samad boarded a train to Bareilly from Shahdara station. He stood near the door.
The train slowed down as it approached Vivek Vihar station. Samad then took out his phone to call up his sister to tell her that he had safely boarded. But just then, a boy leapt at him and snatched his phone.

Before Samad could react, the boy along with other accomplices disappeared into the fields. Samad borrowed a co-passenger’s phone and informed his sister about the incident. Even though his family members asked him to come back home and not worry, Samad was furious as the phone had important numbers and photos that he had not saved elsewhere. He decided to play cop.
Samad got down and began to look for the snatchers. He clearly remembered the face of the boy who had snatched his phone. He kept roaming around the station the whole day. Around 5pm, he finally found the boys sitting on the tracks and rushed to confront them. The boys were doing drugs. A scuffle ensued as Samad demanded his phone. He was thrashed and stabbed repeatedly till he stopped breathing.
The assailants then took away his bag and dragged his body to the tracks to make it look like an accident. Later that evening,
police reached the spot after being informed about a body lying on the railway line. The body had been mutilated as a train had gone over it.
Samad’s family approached the railway police when he didn’t return home. Police were also told about the phone call Samad made. The family identified Samad’s body from the photographs.
DCP (railways) Dinesh Gupta said the autopsy concluded that a stab wound caused the death, and so a murder case was filed and a team led by ACP Sanket Kaushik and SHO Vimal Kumar formed to investigate.
Local inquiries were conducted and all known criminals active in that area were tracked. The team was tipped off by an informer that a criminal named Deepu and his friends could be involved in the murder. Deepu was picked up and interrogated during which he confessed to the crime.
Deepu’s information led to the four other accomplices. Two of them were identified as Aakash and Pradeep and were arrested; the other two were found to be juveniles and one of them was found admitted in a de-addiction centre.
Samad’s bag containing his certificates, tiffin box, watch and ID card was also found.
His wallet had Rs 1,800 that the five distributed among themselves.
